It is not “perfectly reasonable” for a platform the size and scale of Twitter or Facebook to “make judgment calls” about anything, because it’s physically impossible for them to do so. There is no copy desk of editors sitting carefully reviewing and making “judgment calls” on billions of tweets and updates posted by billions of users every day. Indeed, the “rules of conduct” Facebook and Twitter publicize and reference in situations like this are mere distractions. At any given moment, it is a certainty that thousands if not millions of violations of those rules are occurring without the platforms ever taking any action, or anyone calling it out. This is happening every day, and both Jack and Zuckerberg know there’s nothing they can do about it.

I’m not disagreeing with the basic point of the article; I just think we often overlook the basic physics of en masse social media when we start discussing high-profile individuals like Trump. Because it’s obvious the actions of the social media platforms are arbitrary: that’s all they can ever be.
